Iris’s mother, who had immigrated to the United States from Thailand as part of a blended family, died in a car accident along with her American husband while they were on their way to get married. Unwilling to see Iris deported, her stepfather’s son, Leon, dropped out of school to work on a construction site and shoulder the financial burden; as they relied on each other, the two grew close. After graduating from high school, Iris was accepted into a New York law school, just as she had hoped.

Leon promised to join her, but on the very last day, he was involved in an accident at the construction site, and the two lost contact. Five years later, Iris joined a top-tier law firm, and Leon walked through the doors as a billionaire client—reuniting the two.
