About this series
Ignoring warnings, Emperor Augustus is ambushed and fatally wounded on an eastern campaign. He entrusts his empire and only daughter Elizabeth to Caesar Julian, his sworn brother of Thracian peasant birth. Caesar vows before the cross to give her a hundred chances; she swears on the Gospel to treat him well or forfeit all she loves, her name, and a peaceful death. Returning victorious and white-haired after three years, Caesar finds Elizabeth swayed by Cassian. She revokes his powers three times, exhausting her chances, then signs the petition ending their engagement. He leaves. Anna shields him from Persian assassins. Caesar vows never to serve another nation and warns: no higher taxes; honor surrendered Gothic commander Roderick; never trust Persia. Elizabeth ignores everything.
Defeated, she borrows Persian troops. Cassian opens the gates; she is paraded in chains. The empress dowager poisons herself, naming Anna successor. Caesar leads a charge; Marcus’s reinforcements triumph. His flag-draped coffin returns. Elizabeth has her head shaved, renounces her name, and is sent to a convent. A year later, she hears the coffin was empty. In Thrace, a white-haired man repairs a roof beside a woman holding a child. Elizabeth prays: “You took everything, but spared him.
