In a 2014 interview with Alex Debogorski on YouTubeAlex was asked why driving at night is the easiest time on icy roads, and he got a pretty straight forward answer. He replied: “It’s usually the contrast between light and shadow and snowdrifts, and you see where you are on the road. North Alaska tends to have dividers – they basically have sticks on each side of the road, you know. a road with a reflector on it.”

He continued, “Which is interesting because there is a yellow reflector on one side and a white reflector on the other. So if we go into a ditch and the wrong reflector passes you on the passenger side or the driver’s side, you know you’re in a ditch. got into a ditch.” When you think about the general conditions one has to experience when traveling through a desert and snowy landscape, it really makes sense. In the blinding light of day, the reflection on the snow probably hides many obstacles. However, this lack of light is probably a boon at night, because suddenly everything becomes a stark contrast – just remember any time you may have been driving on roads surrounded by snow at night. Black asphalt stands out sharply against the background of white snow. While people like Alex may not have the freedom to travel the tried and true paved road most of the time, the concept remains the same.
