In the Season 2 premiere, “Development Day,” Willard Abbott’s elementary school teachers eagerly prepare for the start of the school year. While the bulk of the plot revolves around Janine’s personal and financial struggles after breaking up with her musically gifted but unmotivated ex, Tariq (even with his brief appearance, Zach Fox is hard to miss), Reddit users have understandably been drawn to more small, emotionally heavy moments in the series.
While Jacob’s eagerness to use his newfound sign language skills plays out for some of the biggest giggles of the episode, his eagerness culminates in a touching moment when he uses ASL to greet a new deaf student. Another”OUInspirational Moment: Gregory goes out of his way to get Barbara a wheelchair accessible table she has been fighting for the entire episode. The expression on her face when she first sees him, when she brings in her new student, sums it all up. that makes this show great.
Referring to these moments u/Triscuits_And_Wine wrote: “Anyone else have watery eyes right now?” Meanwhile, you/gelatinman summed up, “Their easy inclusion of both a deaf and paralyzed child is so touching,” and u/MasterPrek responded, “YES! And these are real children!” The series is already reuniting with its class. A show rarely delivers such poignant performance moments, providing significant screen time to the Philadelphia Flyers’ mascot, Gritty (it’s a long story). With such an impressive debut, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Abbott Elementary at the Emmys next year.
