Trevante Rhodes’ next big screen project was the hugely popular 2018 Netflix film Bird Box. Like a post-apocalyptic horror film broke Netflix records for streaming movie during the aftermath of its premiere in the service after a short theatrical run. In the film, Sandra Bullock plays Malory Hayes, who, along with her two young children and a group of survivors of the collapse of society, must come together to dodge mysterious creatures that cause those who look at them to die by suicide.
Trevante Rhodes played Tom, who went on to become Malory’s longtime race survival partner to outwit the threatening figures. A familiar plot point in the story is the use of blindfolds on the characters’ eyes to avoid accidentally making eye contact with the creatures. When asked in a 2018 interview (via Original-Cin) what it was like to play blindfolded, Rhodes shared: “While working blindfolded was liberating at times, my main takeaway after making this film was that I would never take my vision for granted, or any of my feelings for that matter.” . Both his technical prowess and humanistic performance in the film continued a series of intriguing film roles.
