Under the Skin is full of atmosphere, mood, and tone, but light on plot and dialogue. Thus, the music of the film is in the spotlight. The haunting soundtrack is one of the brightest and most memorable aspects of Under the Skin, and it can be a shock to learn that this incredible original soundtrack was created by a rookie composer.

The film’s breathtaking soundtrack was created by Mika Levy in their very first composing effort (via Film program). Although they were new to making film scores, Levy was not new to music. Prior to writing music, Levy was best known by his stage name Micachu and for leading the band Micachu and the Shapes, whose name was later changed to Good Bad Happy Sad (via Pitchfork).

Jonathan Glaser specifically wanted to find a novice composer for the project. In an interview with british film instituteLevy said, “I think he wanted a newbie—someone who didn’t know how to write film scores. He didn’t want the music to unnecessarily manipulate the audience.” These days, Levy is a seasoned professional in composing original film scores. Years after Under the Skin, Levy scored the films Jackie, Marjorie Prime, and two films from Steve McQueen’s Mangrove Film Collection. Levy later reunited with Jonathan Glaser in 2019 to compose music for his short film. The fall.
