James Gallagher previously participated in a fan Q&A session on Reddit and discussed everything related to his life and the Deadly Catch. One fan asked the crab fisher if he could share some advice with those who want to get into the maritime industry, to which he received an interesting response that certainly dispelled any illusions of glamour about life at sea.
At the end of the day, fishermen can only rely on themselves, Gallagher said. “There is no loyalty in this industry and the only people you can trust to look after you are your brothers on deck and yourself. Boat owners and captains only see us as numbers, we can all be replaced,” he said.
For this reason, the Deadly Catch star advises anyone entering the industry to look after their own interests as well. “You should treat your employers the same way. If you’re serious about being a fisherman, go to Kodiak and hit the docks in May and you’ll find a job.”
