The reboot trilogy begins with Caesar (Andy Serkis), a highly intelligent ape who is raised by Dr. William Rodman (James Franco). Rodman understands Caesar’s biological needs and gives the chimpanzee little leeway, often allowing him to roam freely in the forest. Despite Rodman’s best efforts to make Caesar feel in control, the chimps are still walked on a leash and forced to sit in the trunk of a car. In an interview in 2017 Den of geeksAndy Serkis discussed a pivotal moment from Rise of the Planet of the Apes that essentially sets the stage for the chimpanzee rebellion.

“He looks a lot like a chimpanzee at the beginning of Rise, but there’s a kind of epiphany when Caesar is taken for a walk in the woods in the middle of the movie,” the actor said. After they get back into the car, Rodman orders Caesar to get in the trunk like he usually does, but the chimpanzee refuses, taking the passenger seat instead. “He doesn’t want to be treated like a pet,” Serkis said. “It was a key moment for me. It was improvisation.” This is the first serious decision of Caesar, challenging the people.

The Lord of the Rings actor went on to discuss how he explained his decision to director Rupert Wyatt, saying, “I really think he would, he should want to sit in the front. He no longer wants to be treated this way. .” This turning point causes Caesar to question his place among the people and argue whether he is a pet that sows the seeds for a possible rebellion.
