While in The Avengers Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) commanded SHIELD from a helicarrier moving around the world, The Winter Soldier showed the intelligence agency’s firm ground headquarters at a facility known as the Triskelion. Situated on the Virginia side of the Potomac River, overlooking Washington, DC, the Triskelion serves as a base of operations for Fury and his fellow high-ranking SHIELD officials when they are not on the move. The facility would be destroyed when the helicarrier crashed into it in The Winter Soldier, but its early days are shown in Ant-Man.

Ant-Man’s opening prologue in 1989 briefly shows the appearance of the Triskelion before Hank confronts his S.H.I.E.L.D. colleagues, revealing that the building is still under construction. In 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, it is explained that prior to the construction of the Triskelion, SHIELD was based in a secret bunker under the military base Camp Lehigh in New Jersey, where young Hank worked. While SHIELD may have still been reinventing itself in Ant-Man, its legacy and history are looming large in the 2015 film.
