Colin Quinn himself probably summed up his time on the Weekend Update best with his first joke, which he pulled when he took over as the segment’s host. “Have you ever gone to a bar and found that your favorite bartender has been replaced by a guy named Steve? Well, I’m Steve, what can I offer you?” Taking over the newsroom from his good friend Norm MacDonald, Quinn had a tough move to make, and he knew it. And, unfortunately, he was right: few hosts could match the late great Norm MacDonald.
Quinn has always been a gifted comedian known for his regular characters, but his comic skills just didn’t fit the Weekend Update mold. He went out of his way, in stark contrast to the usual breed of preppy, handsome, sarcastic presenters like Chevy Chase or Charles Rocket, but it never felt right when it came to his new readings.
A fine comedian and natural storyteller, Quinn stands out from the crowd; put him in a suit and put him at the table, and the results will be nowhere near as good. However, you have to admire Quinn’s work ethic and genuine attempt to host. Unlike some of the other hosts, he tried to take his own spin on Weekend Update, casually shrugging his shoulders whenever a joke didn’t get his audience laughing.
