When David E. Kelly was asked Hollywood Reporter in 2018, about a potential Ally McBeal reboot, he told the publication that he would be open to the idea, but not to them. “If it had to be done, it really had to be done by a woman,” he said. “If it’s going to be new, it has to be new and different.”
Now it looks like it might happen. According to Term, a sequel to Ally McBeal is in development, and Karyn Gist, showrunner for Blended and Our People, is reportedly writing the pilot and will be executive producing. Additionally, there seems to be talk of Calista Flockhart reprising her iconic role and becoming an executive producer on the series, however nothing seems to have been established in this regard yet.
Unlike the original, the sequel follows a young black woman who joins the iconic law firm Cage & Fish. The woman will also reportedly be the daughter of Ally McBeal’s roommate, Renee Reddick (Lisa Nicole Carson). Sounds like a fresh direction that fits nicely with the original show, while still allowing this potential sequel series to shine on its own.
