Aside from audiences who could see Robbins’ early theater career in and out of college, most people didn’t know about him until he started appearing in movies in the mid-1980s. However, a few years before his breakout role in Durham Bull – plus his brief appearance in a small film called Top Gun – Robbins made his television debut. Near the start of his run, Robbins played a character named Andrew Reinhardt in three episodes of the groundbreaking medical drama Saint Elsewhere. The show launched the careers of several future stars, including Denzel Washington, Mark Harmon, Howie Mandel and David Morse.

St. Elsewhere isn’t the only show Robbins directed during those early years. During that decade, he also appeared in one episode each of Moonlighting, Hill Street Blues, Amazing Stories, and Love Boat. However, with the exception of Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons, Robbins did not appear on television throughout the 1990s. He returned to the small screen in 2003, starring in the all-star PBS miniseries Freedom: The Story of Us. In 2011, he appeared in the HBO film Cinema Verite, a film about the early history of what would become known as reality television.
