The most important question about Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is when the story takes place. The show is set long before “The Lord of the Rings,” which was confirmed by the showrunners as the series premiere date approaches.
The most expensive show ever made has already been picked up for a second season, meaning the story will be more in-depth and focus on the lesser-known Second Age.

When does “The Rings of Power” take place?
Amazon Prime Videos said before the show was made that the prequel would be set in the Second Age of Middle-earth. Fans of the series will know that this took place a thousand years before the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Since the show is set in the past, many familiar faces won’t be there.
Galadriel will be one of the standouts, but Elrond will be the most prominent elf character, and he’ll get screen time as well. In an interview with Vanity Fair, showrunner Patrick McKay gave some clues as to what to expect “Sauron made rings for elves, dwarves, and commoners. He also made a ring that he used to It’s all about how all these powers came about, where they came from, and what they did to each race.
The official summary gives a better idea of what’s going on: “Amazon Studios is planning a new show that will be the first time that heroic stories from the Second Age of mythical Middle-earth will be shown on television. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of JRR Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’. It will take viewers back to a time when great powers were forged, kingdoms grew glorious and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung hanging from the finest threads and greatest villain whose Tolkien ever wrote threatened to cover the whole world in darkness.”
“Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows a cast of familiar and new characters as they face the dreaded return of evil to Middle-earth. From the deepest parts of the Misty Mountains to the capital of the elves from the beautiful forests of Lindon, the beautiful island kingdom of Nmenor to the far reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will leave behind things that will last long after they are gone.
