Merlin actor Tom Ellis first took on the role of the iconic thief in the second season of Once Upon a Time. As many fans would expect, Tom Ellis’ Robin was smart, charming and handsome – everything a good Robin Hood should be.
Bye Ellis stay in season 2 was short, but made a strong impression. Episode “Lacy” Robin Hood decides to take on recurring antagonist Rumpelstiltskin (a.k.a. Mister Gold) in hopes of stealing a powerful wand. Whenever someone runs into Rumplestiltskin, he is playing a risky game, but Robin doesn’t care about the consequences. After being captured, freed by Belle, and then pursued as he escapes with his wand, Robin is finally forced to reveal that he needs a mystical relic to help Marian, his sick and pregnant partner.
This acquaintance with Robin Hood amazed everyone. The episode showed him as a risky thief who usually steals with good intentions and emphasized that he was as much a lover as he was a fighter. It even included Robin’s canon love interest, Marian (via Story). With such a touching performance under his belt, many fans were hoping to see Tom Ellis reprise his role as Robin Hood. In the third season, the character triumphantly returned, but, unfortunately, Ellis was replaced.
