The veteran 9-1-1 debuted in Season 5 on the tails of the outgoing Maddie Buckley (Jennifer Love Hewitt), and her role quickly took fans by surprise. Vanessa Estelle Williams’ memorable performance as Claudette demonstrates her inspiring confidence as she returns to the 9-1-1 call center with ease and grace, as if she never left it. It comes as a shock to young May Grant (Corinne Massia), who is desperately dedicated to her new position and works tirelessly to save many Los Angeles residents in need. She confesses to her mother, police sergeant Athena Grant-Nash (Bassett), who advises her to stand up for herself.
May takes her advice, which leads the conflicted couple to a “quiet room” where they have a violent confrontation. The two are sadly unaware of what’s going on right below their room (due to electrical maintenance shutting down the fire alarm) and are soon surrounded by growing flames. They escape this fiery fate, but Claudette (who sympathetically reveals her fear of fire and a charred past) is unfortunately rescued by a god-complex serial killer named Jonah (Bryce Durfee). While attempting to revive her on his own, Jonah soon loses her after injecting her with a heart-stopping drug. This devastating loss comes after her sweet reconciliation with Mei, which in turn leaves viewers wanting more from the character.
