The show debuted right at the start of the pandemic, and now it’s ending as we’re sort of back to normal. How did that affect the production and what does the show mean to both of you?

Cuse: It’s had a big impact on the show as we had to run two seasons of the show during the pandemic in a row. It was one of our greatest achievements that we were able to do this without any major COVID. We’ve had a few exceptional cases, but we haven’t had any breakouts or blackouts. We took our responsibility very seriously to try to keep all the crew members and the cast safe, and all of them too. All of the cast and crew were very strict about not behaving in a way that could lead to an outbreak.

We did the show, and we did it from the beginning, before there was a vaccine. So it was a little more dangerous and luckily we also worked in Canada where there was a lot less COVID for a long time. What they all had in common was that they were doing a show that everyone enjoyed doing, but with the common difficulties of being careful because a pandemic was coming. [on]. Because of this, everyone was more closely connected than they could be. [otherwise].

Averill: Definitely, and we had a bit of an accelerated schedule with seasons 2 and 3. We filmed them one by one, and also the writers’ rooms were right next to each other. This led to this unique situation where we were actually writing and breaking down Season 3 before we even started filming Season 2, which is really unique and in some ways very complex. But in a way it was beneficial because it allowed us to come back if there was anything, since we were breaking in the third season, we hadn’t filmed the second season yet, so we were like, “Oh wait, we can come back.” and put in that little detail that will pay off later.” So that was helpful too.
