A new FBI report says Alec Baldwin’s filming on the set of Rust killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, which goes against what the actor has said in the past.

ABC News obtained a copy of the FBI investigative report, which stated that the F.lli Pietta .45 Long Colt caliber single-action revolver used in the film could not have been fired with the trigger. The FBI’s forensic report on the F.lli Pietta gun appears to have come to a conclusion after “accidental discharge testing” of the gun.

What did the FBI tests show about filming Rust?

The FBI report appears to have considered more than one possible position for the revolver hammer. ABC News says the gun could only have fired the bullet in the “quarter and half cock positions” if the trigger had been pulled.

Similarly, when the hammer was fully cocked, the gun “could not be fired without pulling the trigger while the working parts inside were still there and functioning”.

The report also stated that the gun could fire the primer even when the hammer was uncocked. In this case, the hammer was hit in the head.

Even though the official FBI report says Alec Baldwin shot Halyna Hutchins with a prop gun that killed her on the set of Rust, the actor’s attorneys appear to dispute that claim.

Luke Nikas, Baldwin’s attorney, said the FBI report was “misinterpreted”. He said

“The FBI report is taken the wrong way. In testing, the gun only fired once when the hammer was pulled back, without having to pull the trigger. The weapon also broke in two different places. Because the gun was in such poor condition, the FBI was never able to fire, even when they pulled the trigger.

“This is the third time New Mexico authorities have found that Alec Baldwin had no control or knowledge of the allegedly dangerous conditions on set. The person in charge of security on set told him that the gun was “cold”, so he thought it was harmless.

Alec Baldwin has said in the past that he won’t do Rust

In early December 2021, Alec Baldwin, who was 64 at the time, opened up about the accident that killed someone on the set of Rust. He told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos that he didn’t pull the trigger. Baudouin said that:

“Well, the shot didn’t go off. I didn’t press the button. I would never put a gun to someone’s head and pull the trigger. Never.”

Baldwin’s story of what happened on October 21, 2021, when Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins died, appears to be at odds with what the recent FBI report says.

But Baldwin may not be wrong when he says he didn’t pull the trigger. There is no evidence that the FBI conducted the tests with the same revolver used on the Rust movie set. If the revolver used by the FBI was the same one that killed Hutchins, it’s unclear whether the real gun broke down on set or not.
