Who is Maureen Haggas, Wife of William Haggas?
The eldest daughter of the late jockey Lester Piggott is Maureen Haggas. She is the wife of Newmarket trainer and Derby champion William Haggas.
In 1960, Lester married Susan Armstrong, Maureen’s mother. Tracy, Maureen’s younger sister who works for RTE in Ireland, and Jamie, their half-brother, complete the family. Jamie was born while Lester was in a relationship with his assistant, Anna Ludlow.
Lester, Maureen’s father, had a career spanning nearly 48 years as the Queen’s favorite jockey. He started horse racing when he was just 12 years old and won his first race that year.

Lester died in a hospital in Switzerland and William Haggas, his son-in-law, announced his death. When he was admitted to hospital, Maureen and William were caring for him.
Lester’s wife William said little about his health, but revealed he was battling illness and died.
Maureen broke two bones in her neck after falling from a gallop after her horse was startled by a dog, following the death of her father for the Haggas family.

Newmarket Coach William Haggas was born on August 23, 1960. He is 61 years old and was born in Skipton, England. Although Maureen, his wife, did not provide a date of birth, it appears that she is also in her late 50s.
There doesn’t seem to be much of an age difference between the couple as they got married in 1989. Sam and Mary-Anne are the two children of William and Maureen. Sam works as a blood agent and is active in racing like his father.

Haggas won the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick Racecourse in Australia in 2020 and 2021, making him one of Her Majesty The Queen’s most trusted jockeys. His hometown is Skiptop, a community outside the Yorkshire Dales.
Haggas’ father, Brian, was the wealthy textile manufacturer and contributor to the development of the legendary Harris Tweed. William excelled academically while attending the famous Harrow Public School.

At the Manchester Flower Show, a building resembling Piggott was built in his honor and given the name “Groot’s homage” because it was made of twigs. (See embedded image above)
Family members were horrified by his untimely passing, especially Maureen, who cared for him. On the other hand, Maureen has just fractured two vertebrae in her neck and is currently wearing a collar to help her recover.
