In an interview with “The Rubin Report” Melissa Rauch revealed that Bernadette’s voice was inspired by something she heard as a child. “Bernadette’s voice is very similar to my mother’s, except for Jersey’s accent,” she told the host. “Mom, it’s not so high, but in such a tone and in such a range.”
The Big Bang Theory viewers are so accustomed to hearing Rauch speak as Bernadette that they are surprised when they meet her in person. Some fans even consider Rauch not a sitcom star because her real voice sounds very different. “Sometimes they recognize me and then they hear my voice and say, ‘Oh, that’s not you,’” she explained in The Rubin Report.
Rauch can not only imitate the voice of his own mother, but also the brash, Brooklyn-sounding tone of Debbie Wolowitz (Carol Ann Susie). AT 2012 San Diego Comic-ConRauch gave the exact impression that Debbie would have advised Howard if he attended the event: “Howard, make sure you stay away from those people in the Sailor Moon costume.”
