The Black Phone home video release bonus that I’m most interested in is your new short film Shadow Walker. What can you tell us about this short film?

This was during the actual quarantine at the beginning of the pandemic. My house burned down in 2018, so we rented the only house we could find in our area where my kids could continue to be close enough to their school… It was actually Kevin Sorbo’s house. We rented the house he lived in in West Lake Village. I did not like it. It was too big – too many rooms. [I’m] I’m not a big fan of Kevin Sorbo either. But it was the only place where we could live. None of us liked it there, and then, during a pandemic, they suddenly lock us up there. We can’t go anywhere. We are locked in this house.

My oldest son is a musician. He is currently studying at the Berklee College of Music. But [this was] early 2020, June 2020 My youngest son, [who was] He is 14 years old, he is interested in acting and is a very good actor. We decided, “Hey, let’s make a movie right here. We’re here, we’re stuck in this house – let’s make a movie here in the house.”

My son Dashiell had an idea that I thought was really good. I wrote a 10 page script with my script partner and then we shot this little 10 minute movie there. A real quarantine movie. [We] I had a great, great experience, and the only actors in it are my two sons. It was what we did for fun. Then when I showed it to Jason Bloom, Jason said, “I love it. Let’s put it on the ‘The Black Phone’ DVD.” I’m like, “Okay.” It was his idea to put it on DVD. I had no idea what would ever happen to him, if anything.

Are there any plans to stream it?

I have no idea. That’s a good question. My eldest son wrote the music for it – I should mention that as well.

It’s not a masterpiece or anything like that. It’s just a funny little movie about quarantine… It probably won’t air. The DVD is the perfect little life for him. I like that it will be out there somewhere and people will be able to see it, but it’s a bonus feature. People can enjoy. I did a director’s commentary with my son Dashiell and that’s great too because we’re talking more about the story behind it and it’s fun.

Have you already worked with your son on other films or are you planning to do it in the future?

Yes. [My son Dashiell plays] “Geek number one.” It’s the kid who crashes into the pinball machine in The Black Phone that Vance Hopper throws at the Starlog Magazine rack… I just made another short film that I can’t say I’m really happy with . He had a leading role there. He plays a lot in school productions and has appeared in other films. He is very good. He will have a good career.

“The Black Phone” is now available digitally and will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on August 16th.
