As they say, celebrities are just like us. Mark Jackson’s profession may give him the unique opportunity to appear on stages, TV screens and multiplexes around the world, but he’s also certainly not immune to the excitement of finding the perfect show to watch. We’re not sure how a Kylon, like Isaac in The Orville, would react to the binge phenomenon, but that doesn’t mean Jackson isn’t familiar with it.
“I love The Great One, which is also on Hulu, so that’s the Hulu commercial for you,” Jackson said when asked to name his favorite TV series. “This is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen and Douglas Hodge’s acting is great, so it’s great.”
Hulu’s ‘The Great’ tells the largely fictional story of Catherine the Great (Elle Fanning), a real-life figure who ruled Empress of Russia from 1762 to 1796 (via Smithsonian magazine). While many of the show’s characters are loosely based on real-life people, the drama series has been known for taking significant historical liberties since its premiere in May 2020. it has since been renamed “Almost Totally False History”.
Douglas Hodge, an actor whom Jackson especially praised, plays General Velementov in the series. The regularly drunk general is one of the many characters you won’t find in any history book. While the show’s departure from true history probably won’t earn it much praise from history professors, critics seem to have reacted quite favorably to it. It currently has a critical rating of 94% on rotten tomatoes.
You can catch the Orville and “Great” on Hulu. The Orville is now also streaming on Disney+.
