In Los Angeles, California, Scott Peterson went to court on August 11 for a case filed in 2002. His attorney made one last attempt to get a new trial because his wife, Laci Peterson, and future son, Conner , were killed.

In 2004, the California Supreme Court found Peterson guilty and sentenced him to death. In 2021, he receives a new life sentence without the possibility of parole because jurors broke the law.

When Peterson was convicted, the California Supreme Court said the jury hadn’t done enough to find out what people thought of the death penalty. A San Mateo Superior Court judge will now decide whether Peterson can get a second trial.

What did the legal process consist of?

Peterson’s attorney, Cliff Gardner, has more than once asked Judge Anne-Christine Massullo for a new trial. Gardner said the defendant’s trial was unfair. It’s because of Richelle Nice, who served as a juror in a family dispute case. Gardner then said it was clear the juror was against Peterson because he wanted to be famous or loved. Prosecutors came out and said Nice had no plans and didn’t want to talk about his family issues. He also said Nice’s case of a family dispute was still before the courts. So we can’t call her a criminal. David Harris also said: “Ms. Nice isn’t very good at filling out forms. As the two lawyers were discussing the case for the last time, Judge Massullo questioned them. During the hearing, Laci’s mother, Sharon Rocha, said, “Laci died because she loved you, Scott. Rocha continued, “She believed in you and she trusted you, but you hurt her, your son and everyone.”

Previous trials and final verdict

In December 2021, Judge Anne-Christine Massullo sentenced Peterson to life in prison without parole for killing his wife. For killing his unborn child, Massullo was sentenced to an additional 15 years to life in prison. Laci’s sister said she would testify against Peterson if he received a new trial. Even though the closing arguments in the case ended Thursday, August 11, the court won’t know for sure if Peterson will get a new trial for 90 days.
