In a previously unpublished interview originally recorded for Rolling Stone (which was only released in 2020) Wrapper)author Steve Pond sat down with then-22-year-old Keanu Reeves on the set of Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.
When Pond asked Reeves how long he had been playing, the latter replied, “Well… I don’t know if I play.” currently. I am very bad. I mean, I’m fine, but most of the time when I do it, I hate playing. Later in an interview, he doubled down on these claims: “I have other interests,” Reeves explained, “but not as all-consuming as this damn job.”
While these comments must be taken with a pinch of salt (given the fact that Reeves has spent the past three decades establishing himself as one of Hollywood’s most prolific actors), it’s certainly shocking that the now legendary actor voices his disdain for creating and critiquing his own performance. . Perhaps the most hilarious part of this openly negative interview is the fact that Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure ended up becoming a beloved cult classic, despite Reeves’ clear disdain for his acting. Either way, this unique interview gives us a glimpse of what Keanu Reeves was like before his success, when he still had doubts about whether he was really a talented actor.
