As Better Call Saul draws to a close, co-writer Vince Gilligan wrote and directed Vodokanal, the penultimate episode of the final sixth season. But in hindsight, he made a mistake in the Gene/Jimmy evolution back to Saul Goodman. According to television lineGilligan admitted to reporters during the Television Critics Association virtual press tour that he “realized that Gene, at the very end of the final act, had to talk to Jeff on a Bluetooth headphone, because in the previous episode, in which he again became Saul with a headphone. I turned it down when I wrote the episode.”
With how carefully the creative team orchestrated the storyline and pace of work on Better Call Saul, it’s surprising to hear such a detail was left out, but it also shows that Gilligan is human. Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul may be as close to TV perfection as some fans can get, but even perfectionists can be wrong. We’re pretty sure fans will forgive this oversight, as we’ve been too busy watching the worlds of Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad face Kim Wexler’s chance encounter with Jesse Pinkman, and are relieved that Jin isn’t hurt Carol Burnett [as Marion]. With recognition from Odenkirk Vanity Fair that Marion is connected to someone on the show – and there’s only one episode left – we held our breath, waiting to see what would happen next.
