Characters who are killed and then brought back to life are a common element of TV shows with a supernatural element, and several central characters die multiple times in The X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Supernatural. In this type of drama, the death of the protagonist is no guarantee that he will remain dead, no matter how dramatic and emotional it may seem at the moment.
In the season 3 finale of Charmed, titled “All Hell Breaks Free,” the death of one protagonist is nothing short of destruction. In this episode, the Halliwells confront Shaxx, and right in the middle of it all, a reporter publicly declares them to be witches. Amid all the chaos that ensued outside the estate, the sisters end up confronted by an obsessed fan named Alice, who shoots Piper with a high-powered rifle. Due to the media circus outside their home, it takes too long for her to get to the hospital, and Prue stands in agony, crying out for Leo as the doctors can’t save her sister.
Fortunately, Tempus returns the timeline to the first meeting with Shaxx, saving Piper from a terrible fate. Unfortunately, Prue dies almost instantly in combat, a fact not revealed until the next season.
