While Blade Runner’s opening text may introduce us to the concept of Replicants, “retirement” and the Nexus 6 rebellion that sets our story in motion, it’s this first glimpse of the Los Angeles skyline. Indeed tells us which movie we are going to see.

It’s 2019, and as Vangelis’ synth soundtrack thrives, we’re presented with an urban landscape – an endless cluster of high lights and twinkling lights bright enough to outshine the night sky. In the distance, barely visible through the haze of the city, two huge ziggurats loom. We don’t know it yet, but these anachronistic structures house the Tyrell Corporation, the company responsible for creating and innovating artificial life. Towers of flame reflect in the unblinking, piercing blue eye of Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer), a Nexus 6 replicant who has returned to Earth to meet his creator.

Blade Runner’s opening shots exude atmosphere and scale. We are introduced to the film’s first oracle motif, and the underlying tension between man and machine becomes clear. A huge feat of creating the world, the first moments of Blade Runner belong to the museum. Wait, wrong Harrison Ford movie… but our point of view still stands!
