Before the screening of Heat, Al Pacino was asked who he would cast as Detective Vincent Hannah if the film were shot today, and he replied, “Timothée Chalamet. Great actor, good looks” (via Liz Arcuri on Twitter). Academy Award Winner Pacino counts Oscar nominee Chalamet is the number one contender for the character Pacino made famous, and he may be on to something.
Chalamet is not opposed to making sequels, as he has shown interest in a Call Me by Your Name sequel in the past (via Time) and is already subscribed to Dune: Part 2. The actor also doesn’t mind playing younger versions of well-established characters, having received praise for his performance in the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory prequel trailer Wonka. But can he play one of Pacino’s most iconic roles?
An origin story for a character like Detective Hannah will require top-notch effort from someone who can make viewers sympathize with such a tough man’s struggle to establish himself in the morally ambiguous realm of robbery and murder. David Rooney from Hollywood Reporter spoke of Chalamet’s performance in Dune, acknowledging his “magnetic thoughtfulness”. [that] gives the element of growing up a bit of heart.” Telling the story of an unfortunate newcomer entering a world filled with uncertainty, betrayal and danger, Chalamet proved his skill. Race 2 is over, he doesn’t have to look far for a strong candidate to play the irresistible and compelling young Vincent.
