Tenoch Huerta is set to make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as the legendary Submariner Namor, King of the underwater kingdom of Talokan (Atlantis in the comics). Namor is the antagonist of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. but Huerta spoke in a recent interview with Black Nerd Girls about how his on-screen admiration for his character T’Challa mirrors his own admiration for the actor who played him, Chadwick Boseman.
“My character has a deep admiration for Black Panther, T’Challa,” Huerta said. “But for me as an actor and as a human being, what Chadwick has in mind is so powerful and profound.” Huerta said that Boseman greatly inspired him to play the role of Namor, likening his presence in the film to his shadow on a wall that the other actors can then fill in with their creativity. And, as you can see from the interview, Huerta’s words clearly come from the heart.
It’s a breathtaking look at how real emotion can inform even the biggest comic book characters with ankle wings under the right circumstances, which of course is a big part of what Marvel comics have always been. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will hit theaters on November 11.
