The Sun in all its glory, in a picture so detailed it takes your breath away. This is the latest make use of made by the Sun Orbiter probe, the space observation television satellite of the European Space Agency (ESA) dedicated to the study of our planet. Produced with the Severe Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) telescope, the unpublished amalgamated image of the Sun results from photographs taken on March 7, approximately 32 a huge number of kilometers from Earth. This is the highest resolution rendering to date of the full disk of the Sun, its outer atmosphere and its corona. These data will notably allow a more in-depth understanding of solar flares. A difference in temperature between its surface area and its crown, which is still a mystery to scientists, can also be studied more closely.

To realize the image, the telescope EUI the m take 26 individual shots. The device notably catches pictures so high resolution that, being too close to its target, a sober mosaic of pictures must be made to be assembled in order to obtain a single complete picture afterwards. The telescope then took more than four hours to be able to cover the entire Sun, counting approximately 10 mins put each part, as well as the temperatures necessary for the ship to tip the objective from one position to another.

Finally, the 25 shots together give a more sober picture 83 hundreds of thousands of sober pixels, in a sober frame 20900 back button 2022 pixels. Sober comparison, the 4K resolution is times lower. Moreover, by passing exactly between the Earth and the Sun, Solar Orbiter has taken pictures that can be taken anywhere close to those already taken with terrestrial tools. These comparative data are very valuable for understanding how the Sun works.

To better understand solar flares and at atmospheric temperature

Located in a sober wavelength 17 nanometers, in the electromagnetic spectrum below the extreme ultraviolet, the image soberly reveals very clearly a corona (upper atmosphere) of the Sun. At 2 and 8 o’clock, dark filaments on its surface are also visible in the image. These kinds of giant bubbles are particularly likely to burst causing solar flares, which will project gigantic quantities of matter into the corona and into space.

In addition, Solar Orbiter also photographed our star in a Lyman-beta wavelength sober to the ultraviolet light emitted by hydrogen (the gaseous state with a sober temperature 03 D). This is the first snapshot of its kind in 20 years, taken by the probe’s Coronal Environment Spectral Imager (Essence). The instrument is in fact designed to observe the Sun’s atmospheric sofas, from the corona to the chromosome (the lower solar atmosphere, located between the photosphere and the corona, and which is noticeable only during total clippings). To do this, the device analyzes the different wavelengths in the extreme ultraviolet, emitted by different atoms such as hydrogen, oxygen, carbon and no.

Once collected, this data will allow ESA scientists to trace the solar flares that sony ericsson produce in the photosphere. These particularly violent phenomena project thousands of tons of ionized matter into the corona, several hundred thousand of kilometers of altitude.

in the superior atmospheric sofas will be amply additionally also observed. This is notably one of the most enigmatic phenomena of astrophysics, because logically, a temperature is supposed to decrease away from a sober hot object. However, for the Sun, the temperature below the crown reaches 1 million below the surface, while below the surface, the temperature is only about 2000 D. According to an ESA press release, investigating this mystery is one of Photo Voltaic Orbiter’s main objectives.

Tasks to come

Sun Orbiter marked with a white stone the 26 sober this month , sober reaching for a first time child prihlie (the point sober boy orbits um its length by connection to the Sun is minimal). The space television satellite is now inside orbiting Mercury, the planet closest to the Sun. expected, as well as data on solar ports. For the next few years, ESA also plans to obtain images of specific, rarely observed areas of the Sun, such as its poles.
