our heater recently went out and my husband is confounded by it. he says it's a gas furnace but it has an electric heating element that glows when the gas comes on. it's not coming on and we don't know why or how to fix it. any clues?

find part #'s and serial id's or a model number and hit google... chances are you're not gonna know what's running what even if you know what's what. Unless it's a huge phospher based heating element i couldn't imagine where a heating coil would necessarily ever come into play unless being used to spark the gas for the blowers... even then it'd be odd to use a coil in that scenario as torching them would likely degrade them very fast. XD

That electric heating element is called a hot surface ignitor. Most likely, you need to replace yours. It's a common problem
