Shouldn't ATM machines ask you if you want to accept a fee? Messages 1 - 17

Whenever I see that an ATM machine is wanting to charge me a fee to use it, I bail out and go to my own bank. When my PC was bad at home I sometimes went in Kroger and checked my UsBank account balance from their Stock Yards Bank ATM. I also have an account at Stock Yards. Anyway I just got online and looked at my Usbank account and I was charged $2.00 every time I checked my balance from the Stock Yards ATM. About $14.00 in all in fees. ATM's are supposed to ask you if you want to proceed if a fee is involved, and you have to press a button even saying it's alright to be charged the fee. What do yo think? Which one of the two banks are guilty if any? Which one should I complain to? I know I won't get my money back.

It should be a "selection" made to accept any fees prior to proceeding and automatically charging you.

Mission accomplished: I just returned from Usbank. They said I should have been told that there was a fee. They also said the fee should have been $1.50 rather than the $2.00 I was charged. They looked up 13X that I got a balance and was charged $2.00 and they gave me $26.00 back. They did say that any time you use someones elses machine you should assume that there is a fee even if not asked. I didn't agree with this but kept my mouth shut. Turned out better than I planned. I like Usbank. They all know me in there.

I've been thinking about changing to US Bank, everyone I know who banks there loves it.
I have all my accounts through 5/3 right now. Savings, Checkings, Mortgage, CDs, etc. And I have to say, 5/3 bank is the shittiest bank I have ever dealt with. They will hold checks for 3-5 days before the money is actually deposited in your account, however the balance will reflect the deposit before it's actually in your account. Back in the day, I overdrew my account many times because of this.

I hate 5\3. I bank with Kentucky Telco, which is a credit union, and I really like them.

As soon as Cumberland became 5/3 I left. That was years ago. My dad has one of his accounts at 5/3. My dad gave me a check from 5/3 and I went there to cash it and they wanted to charge me $8.00 to cash the check. That was recently. I couldn't believe it since it was his bank I was cashing it at.

I have a 5/3 checking account that is in my name only and I asked my husband to go and make a CASH deposit into that account. He had a deposit slip and everything. They would not allow him to make a CASH DEPOSIT into my account.
5/3 also charges crazy ATM fees. If you use another banks ATM, you not only get their service charge but 5/3 will charge you up to $1.50 for using another atm.

Commonwealth Bank is where it's at. No atm fees, 4.5% return and they refund charged up to $18 a month for using other atms.

I bank through PNC and I haven't ever had a problem out of them

But to answer the topic's question, yes it should ask and its the fault of the bank who owns said ATM, so if it was a Stock Yard bank ATM, they're at fault.

I think you're right. I was half way expecting Usbank to tell me to go and talk to Stock Yards about the problem but they didn't.

Honestly a lot of the big banks are shitty to deal with. National City, 5/3rd, even US Bank. My cousin banks with RiverCity and likes it. I bank with BB&T. I had US Bank and my employer one day didn't turn in the payroll info and we didn't get paid on time which resulted in me getting 2 over draft fees of 37.50 each. US Bank wouldn't reverse them and I explained that for the first time my employer messed up payroll and their response was we're sorry but it's not a bank error. I left them because they do have the power to reverse it. Most banks aren't consumer friendly to those of us who live on a limited budget.

Some ATMs have a sticker on the front somewhere that says transactions with cards from other banks will be charged. They tend to be pretty small and easy to overlook. I have my account with National City and have never had a problem. They were quite helpful one occasion when an error on my part resulted in three hundred dollars of overdraft fees. They forgave all but $40. Now that they have merged with PNCn though, I'll be taking my business to my credit union. Had an account with PNC before and wasn't happy.

There should always be some kind of notice (sticker or prompt)
It's cool that they went ahead and did the refund, usually you would have to go to your bank and they would have to dispute it for you with the other institution.

This machine at Stock Yards prompts you if you attempt to withdraw money but it say nothing when you get a balance. I figured since it prompted me about a withdraw which I didn't accept that it would prompt you about other fees.

That's strange..I had always been told ATM's will not charge just to check the balance...so that's what I tell all the members, gonna have to do some research now.

But if you have no business relationship with a bank, why would you think you could use their ATMs to do anything and not pay a fee?
