Seems like a lot of us are experiencing a bit of a let down after the Winter Olympics on NBC. Seems like NBC may be feeling it even more than the viewers. After watching a rousing closing ceremony we stayed tuned for, "The Marriage Ref."
Let's face it...when Jerry Seinfeld puts his name on something you pretty much figure it's going to be a.) good and b.) funny. Well let me let you in on this....there should be a c.) it totally sucked.
Because it did. Suck. A lot. There was a panel with celebrity judges who got to discuss whether it's okay for a guy to keep his dead stuffed dog in his house and whether a man should be allowed to install a stripper pole in the bedroom he shares with his wife.
So I sat there and I was thinking, "This HAS to be stupid. There's just no way they will make this funny." Next time I'll listen to that little voice inside my head and not watch. It wasn't funny. The story lines were set up and stupid and while the reactions of the wives were amusing, that's where my amusement ended.
The most depressing thing I heard was at the end when they said, "coming up this season." Season? Really? No way. The show's idiotic and it cheapens all the great work Jerry Seinfeld's done as a funny guy. And he's not even the host. There's some total dork as the host.
But NBC's in a bad spot. They banked on Leno at 10 and lost. Now he's back to "The Tonight Show" and there's all that prime time viewing with nothing to fill it. There are no dramas in production and ready to go so they have no choice but to fill it with inane reality shows like, "The Marriage Ref."
It's a swing and a miss at a time when NBC needs home runs like crazy. I can only hope there's something better coming down the pike. And the affiliates can only hope the same thing.
Did I miss something? Did anyone watch it and laugh like there's no tomorrow?
I watched it. The concept and the show were funny. It can be better though.
The thing that would improve it is if the three people giving their opinion to the ref were allowed to speak more. The interaction between those three people is the best part.
They need to state the problem between the couple in 25 words or less; no extensive video of their home and them sitting in front of the Skype camera. This would allow three segments instead of two.
I don't usually watch "reality" shows. Well I do watch The Amazing Race, but that's all. I'll be watching this one at 10 p.m. on Thursdays.
It's getting a lot of promotion. Seinfeld was on Oprah today with the guy who is the Marriage Ref.
i agree. the "panel" is funny but don't get much play. to me, they bounce the lame guy who's "the ref" and make seinfeld the ref. the way it was promoted that's what i thought would happen to begin with. i can't believe they've scored Madonna to be on the panel. just seems like a big dud to me. My husband and I thought i'd be funny...but the two examples were no brainers. of course the guy can't keep his stuffed dead dog in a shrine and of course the other guy can't have a stripper pole if his wife won't use it. just seemed like a waste of air space. then again, that's the beauty of t.v. if you don't like it, there's always other stuff on!!
I watched it and was less than enthused myself but I will give it another chance I think... Not much on 10 at night anyway and that is the only time I am in charge of the TV around here so hopefully it will get better! Plus, I think it will depend on who the celebs are as to how funny it will be... I don't see Madonna as funny but Ricky Gervais could breathe and I would probably laugh... I will let you know what I think after the next episode...
A show you should be watching is Undercover Boss... It is an amazing program and is very heartwarming... Plus, a local company will be on this month... Can't tell you who on here but shoot me a message if you want more info!!
LOVE Undercover boss...and the word's out that Churchill Downs will be featured, I think it's March 14th. I think the local affiliated was OUT TO LUNCH not to have localized this hit. i've been kicking around a blog idea on that topic. When so much of series reportings in sweeps is lame, getting local CEO's to go undercover would have been a ratings SCORE for the local CBS. such a sad loss for all that no one took the time to do it.
Abby- I knew the word was out on Churchill, it is a different local company that I have heard about... Not as well known but employs a ton of people here... And the CEO is a hoot, not to mention great looking for the ladaies! It will be great TV....
