In 4 years of high school, the only unscheduled time off that we got was a half-day for flash-flooding of Beargrass Creek. The parents who were facing ruined carpets & furniture called school wanting their children home to help with rescue efforts.
I think I had a Sat. college class canceled once - for a large, unexpected early November snowfall.
