Nashville musician and former major label recording artist (poor major labels … no one needs them anymore!), Matthew Ryan will be coming to The Monkey Wrench tonight to promote his new album, Dear Lover. I've only heard the few tracks that WFPK has been playing because, well, the album doesn't officially come out until next week, I think. But I've played many a show with Matthew, and he's a wonderful songwriter and excellent performer. WFPK's Laura Shine named Dear Lover her 2009 Album of the Year, even though it was only technically released to radio stations. I tend to trust Laura's taste in music because she likes folks like John Prine and Carole King and generally good songwriters.
Also on the bill is Louisville songstress Rebecca Williams, who has been working her butt off, like an honest musician should, to promote herself and her EP. She's definitely someone to watch out for. I haven't seen anyone as good and determined to succeed in ages, and it always makes me so happy to see another hard-working musician get a cool gig like this one. So go check her out, and buy her EP, and tell her I told you to do it.
