Big Fat Super News Items

So you watched American Idol last night -- I was entertained by watching CBS' hour-long special on Super Bowl commercials. It was hilarious (a Budweiser spot of a streaking lamb was voted the best of the decade) and got me all warmed up for the big game Sunday. And to think I used to just watch those NFL Films recaps of the actual games to get fired up.

Now here's some news.

Cut the Fat: A Trans Fat Task Force, not surprisingly, "strongly recommends" a ban on the use of trans fats at area food service establishments. I don't think it should be a law enforcement issue, and believe that enough Metro Council members will stand up against the unnecessary regulation. One primary argument for it is that so many other jurisdictions have done it.

Billy and the Cards: Today's your first chance to get Billy Reed's book on Freedom Hall. He'll be at the downtown Rotary Club meeting at the Galt House today, where they are honoring Dr. Dunkenstein and his 1980 national champs. The book, you can now order it online from Butler Books.

Super School Issue: There's a bit of a hubbub going on in Indiana over whether school should be dismissed because the Colts are in the Super Bowl, as our Beverly Bartlett points out this morning. And since the Indiana archdiocese makes decisions for the whole state, it looks like even Clark and Floyd County Catholic schools get the day off Monday.

Free Get-out-of Work Notes: For anyone who shows up at our big party Sunday at Saints, Mojo will write you a note to your boss excusing you from work Monday.

You mean it's a Trick?: The Trey Grayson camp was quick to react to yesterday's release of a Rand Paul campaign commercial. Grayson's peeps say Paul is trying to "trick Republican primary voters" and say he's flip-flopped on the national security issue. OK, but Trey, let's see what you got.

Wishy Washy Gov: Anybody surprised that Kentucky residents are split down the middle on the kind of job Steve Beshear's doing as governor? Check the latest Bluegrass State Poll results, and see what you think. While governors all over the U.S. are doing just as poorly in polls due to the economy, the state Republican leadership simply calls Beshear a "one-issue" governor whose term can be summed up easily -- "Failed leadership."

Domestic Violence Court: The move by the Metro Council's Vicki Aubrey Welch to set aside two courts for domestic violence cases is much-needed and a move in the right direction. County attorney Mike O'Connell is on board too. There are 4,000 cases a year in District Court. If passed, 2 District Court judges would be assigned to it.

Snow Coverage: I just don't get the way local media covers weather. Last week, there was a threat of snow and all hell broke loose. WAVE's John Belski writes on his blog that there will be some snow here Friday night, yet not once have I seen Lindsay English of the Mayor's Office on TV telling us how prepared the city is. Hmm.

Was that a shot at Us? I like all those folks over at LEO, but I question the promo in their latest edition, which reads: "In today's world of blogs, vlogs, Tweets and chain e-mails, a printed newspaper may seem a little old-fashioned. And it is. At least in the sense that LEO still produces real quality journalism with -- get this -- verified sources. Sounds almost quaint, huh? Actually, sounds a little dumb to be taking shots at people like us, who have way more readers than they do. And the last word.

So your gripe against banning trans-fats is that it's 'unnecessary regulation'. That was the same argument used against the smoking ban, and in earlier generations, open spittoons in bars. Funny, nobody's running on a pro-smoking platform these days. The trans-fat ban will come, as the smoking ban eventually did, and we'll all be healthier because of it.
