This just in: Oprah tells Jay to his face that he wasn't funny.
Ok... She was talking about one particular joke, one that even make his audience groan. But still, calling him out on even one joke it a bit of vindication for those of us irritated by him.
I wrote on Wednesday about how unfunny Leno was, but I didn't go into the recent example of the back and forth between he and Letterman.
Letterman made some jokes that, rather gently really, suggested Leno ought to move along to his next gig, rather than trying to get his old job back.
You can see it here.
Leno returned fire by suggesting that if he wanted to be ignored by Letterman, he would have to marry him. Because once you do that, he won't look you in the eye.
If Leno can't see the difference in these two jokes, it explains a lot about why he's not funny.
1) For something to be funny, it has to be true. If Leno is talking about Letterman's affair with an intern, it is well established that it took place years before he was married.
2) The joke doesn't get back at Letterman, it gets back at Letterman's wife -- who is a famously private person.
You can read about and watch Leno's attempt to justify himself to Oprah here. He characterizes it as one cheap shot for another. Yeah, but one of them was funny.

Start drinking early this morning, BB? Opah (misspelled in the heading), first link is 404, and the "here" link isn't linked to anything. Leno didn't ask to get The Tonight Show back. Conan's ratings sucked, and NBC wouldn't release Leno from his contract. What are you going to do if you're Leno, say, "No, thanks, NBC, I don't want to return to the job I had where I owned my time slot." |

Spelling and links fixed - it's nice to publish on the Web. You can't press undo or redo in the paper world. |

I agree that both Leno and Letterman 'can' be funny but when they get in a pissing contest with each other they both look bad... As for Oprah, last time I checked I pee sitting down and I can't stand her either.. I have watched her when she had an exclusive guest or sometimes when Dr. Oz was a guest on her show. However, I think Oprah is boring and she usually gets on my nerves!! |
