Western Kentucky has fired football coach David Elson.
The school, in its first season as a Division I football school, is 0-9 and just lost its Homecoming Game, 40-20, against Troy.
According to ESPN's Pat Forde, the decision to fire Elson was made Sunday night. He'll stay on and finish out the season.
Forde reported that the school will hold a press conference today at 2 p.m. Eastern time to make the announcement. A call to the WKU sports information office seeking confirmation has not been returned.
Western plays at Louisiana-Monroe and Florida Atlantic and hosts Arkansas State to finish up the season. WKU opened the season with a 63-7 loss at Tennessee, and hasn't been competitive in any of its games this season.
Elson, 38, had been at WKU for 14 years, the last seven as head coach, and compiled a 39-41 record.
oh man, he was such a cool guy too :( i remember him speaking at one of our athletic band banquets when i was at WKU.
but yea, our football record the last few years has been quite poor. not so sure about UL though, every now and then we seem to come out on top when playing with them, of course that was in basketball and nothing to do with our less than attractive football program....
I would just like to ask... was WKU's program REALLY ready for FBS Subdivision competition? And if this move wasn't made, would Elson still have a job? Plus, WKU just had arguably it's program's best ever recruiting class... kinda unfair to Elson, but College Football is definately a "What have you done for me lately?" world...
