Alright kids, the weather's going to be great again, now go outside and play. Here's some stuff I noticed this beautiful Sunday.
Going Dick-less: In a business like TV news, there seem to be going-away parties way too often. But it's rare for a guy with Dick Irby's experience to leave town. I crashed the party thrown by producer Jennifer Keeney last night. The gang from Fox41 treated Irby, who's moving to Arkansas, to a blooper real and some hilarious send-offs.
Department of name-dropping: Plenty of Dick's colleagues at Fox41 turned out, including Chris Turner, Bennett Haeberle, Jennifer Baileys, Elizabeth Woolsey.
Whatever Happened To...: WHAS-TV's Doug Proffitt found the old Louisville Falls Fountain from the air in New Albany. Says it still works, it just cost too much to operate. The city shut it down in 1998.
Sweeps Update: What in the world could Charles Boney say NOW about the 9-year-old David Camm case? WLKY's Ben Jackey find outs in a heavily-hyped interview Monday. And Joe Arnold will air a revealing look at what the money in each Metro Councilman's Neighborhood Development Funds go to.
Zenyatta is a Horse: There was great drama and a strong performance from Zenyatta in the Breeders Cup Classic. Sometimes, the broadcast went a bit overboard on the storyline. And when Jerry Moss, Zenyatta's owner, was asked how he decided to run the horse in the Classic, he said, seriously, that he just let the horse decide.
The Death Penalty: The C-J's big Sunday story illustrates how inefficient Kentucky is when it comes to adminstering the deatlh penalty. Many in the state's death row population have been there 20 years.
Smoke-Free Hotel: Hard to believe there's any controversy over this, but the Galt House is going smoke-free -- not in your room, in the lobbies, not in the ballroom. It also just became the official host hotel for Churchill Downs. Hmm. The new policy starts January 1.
Cards Not That Embarrassing: If you watched the Cards' 17-9 loss at West Virginia yesterday, you likely came away thinking the team's not really that bad. Or maybe that the Mountaineers aren't that good. But there's still little hope for Steve Kragthorpe.
Voice of the Knights: Bellarmine has its own radio network, with its games airing on WGTK-AM, and the new play-by-play guy got some airtime on WAVE-3 last week. He's Nick Curran, a current student at WKU who interned at WAVE last year.
And Don't Forget: If you're coming to the Breakfast of Champions event at the University Club, it starts bright and early at 7 a.m. And we will start without you.
