Louisville Mojo: This Week's Tea Party at Yarmuth's Place

Apparently White Males are the next endangered species.

That sentiment was overheard at a recent tea party-style rally of about 40 or so outside Congressman John Yarmuth's offices on Martin Luther King Jr. Place in downtown Louisville.

Carrying a placard denouncing Marxism, "Reagan Defeated It, Obama Embraces It!", Les Naiman, a caterer and conservative radio host on AM 970 WGTK, is one of a group of people who mobilize for regular protests against liberal policies outside Yarmuth's offices.

"I'm a businessman who's just scared to death for this country," Naiman said about why he was there today.

"It's a call to action," he said of the gathering. "We fear that no matter what we say...no matter what we do, the people in Washington are going to force this down our throats."

Naiman talked to fellow tea partyers about how the health care reform bill making its way through Congress would be used by Democrats as a backdoor attack on gun ownership, by refusing health care coverage to gun owners - an argument the St. Petersburg Times' PolitiFact website says is untrue.

"They're trying to usurp the Constitution under the guise of health care reform," he said.

Marilyn Parker, a Louisville nurse who plans to run against Yarmuth in the next election, said she came out to today's protest to support "these good citizens of the Third District who understand what's at stake for our country."

"They understand that it is the administration's radical agenda to control, regulate, ration and tax our health care industry at a price that our country simply cannot afford."

	That's interesting. They are taking their message about the plight of white males to John Yarmuth. See? A white guy can't even get elected to Congress anymore. Oh... wait.

	Implying these folks are racists, even when you have compelling evidence, doesn't get us any closer to figuring out how to move forward...Does it?

	i'm certainly not trying to imply that at all, actually. i don't think they are that. i do think that comment might suggest a certain mindset or perspective, one that many might agree with, but i don't think it means they're racist at all. i actually enjoyed talking to and kinda liked the folks i talked to today.

	You (supposedly) heard it being said when you walked up, and yet you failed to mention that anywhere in the piece? While it was indeed "an eyecatching lede" (truth be told, it was the only reason I bothered to click the "Read more..." link), it also appears to be just a bit on the disingenuous side. 	whatever, dude. i made it clear that i overheard it, and i doubt the person who said it would deny it. at least i'd hope he'd have the courage of his convictions. i can respect someone i disagree for that, but people who just try to act like someone's making something up because they don't personally like it are, well, eh par for the course.

	i willa dd this, though: i want to make this site as much as possible a place where every side gets heard, so if you'd like to spout off your side of the issues on local politics, please start a blog and let me know about it. if it's halfway decently written, and it seems like you can write, i'll be more than happy to make it one of the featured blogs. that's what the whole citizen-journalism thing we're trying to foster is all about. we're trying to get people involved on all sides of the issues and are always looking for good content to feature. so write about the news the way you see fit. i've been a working journalist for a decade, and i honestly believe that the future of the field is headed this way, online and interactive, so get on the bus.

	Les Naiman's show on WGTK is Sunday at 10:00 PM. I;ve listened in a few times, and have always wanted to call in and set him straight. Maybe this weekend I'll actually do that! Maybe more people should call in and let him know that, in spite of the tea and catering, he's out to lunch.

	I think we know what this is. They're white. They're aging. They don't like it that the country has "changed". (Of course, the obvious reality is that the country changes everyday!). They are like a grumpy old man on a rant. "If we could only go back to the good old days!" they chant, without realizing that, not only is this impossible, but the good ol' days weren't that good for everybody.

	I suppose I could take your word for it, but truth be told, I have my doubts as to the veracity of the claim. Regardless, it served its purpose, as it not only provided an "eyecatching lede", but it also set the overall mocking tone of the piece. Of course, while I may personally disagree with said tone, you are free to mock and impugn to your heart's content, and I'm happy that Mojo provides such an outlet. However, don't be surprised if some simply dismiss you as just another lefty blogger. As to your offer, I'll certainly keep it in mind. In the meantime, I'll gladly continue to be a supporting member of this wonderful site.
