About 2 months ago, I cajoled G into pulling out some paper (light blue) and his art and easel set - and painting a pic to enter in our company Christma...oh, wait, I mean HOLIDAY Card contest (gotta be PC you know...ugh)
last year he had done the same, and was thrilled with the $5 "thank you for entering" prize they sent along...
he is all about the money - not having QUITE mastered the yogic yamas and niyamas at age 7 - but hey, I am still working on them too, though I have the "non-possessive" one down pretty well...anyway...
This year I thought his creation was pretty good - more is less and all, I am all about simplicity these days...
He painted, in oil paints, with interesting texture notes and brush strokes...a simple scene of an overhanging white sky, big fat white "snowblobs" drifting down onto a traditional looking snowman with a carrot nose and a simple fir tree with a lone gold star adorning the tip...nice..
the oil paint took FOREVER to dry...and I knew if I mailed it off to the Stockton, CA, office, it would get all smeared, so I carefully laid it face down on the copier, scanned and copied it, wiped down the glass, and mailed it off to the contest coordinator Ms. Eades...
we got the email yesterday....he won!
I called up his school and got him to call me back, then I set up a conference call so Ms. Eades could break the news to G herself...he was as thrilled as I thought he would be..probably part of the thrill was getting called out of class to call his Dad on the phone, I can hope anyway...
The prize?? $100 - not a fortune to me or you, but to a 7 year old - untold riches! Besides, now he can afford to get me that lap dance I asked for for Christma...KIDDING (I know you cannot say Christmas anymore, someone might get "Offended" and Lor...I mean Allah knows we would not want to offend anyone with such a solid sense of self that the mere mention of a Holiday that millions of people celebrate throws them into a tizzy...right?"
Anyway, back on point Wilson...
the other prize is a supply of the cards....
I asked for 150 - I am going to send them to everyone I can think of - It was such a cute painting I saved the original - which is now dry...and was going to get it made into cards at the local print shop...now I don't have to...all I have to do is highlight G's name in yellow highlighter on the back of the Corvel cards - haha..
I was a bit surprised to find SO MUCH parental pride come out of the experience - most parents are probably veterans of this...anytime your kid wins or excels at or is recognized in anything, it is an amazing rush...
G will never make the all-star team - in any SPORT - he is a true dork, very uncoordinated at all save video games...but that is OK, I am good with having him excel at art instead...I always find artistic people the most interesting and inspiring, and besides, the orthopedic co-pays for parents of teen artists are much lower than for athletes....haha..
