Don't Be Fooled: At first glance, the new proposal offered by Senate President David Williams might make you think the obstructionist lawmaker is coming around on gambling in Kentucky. Horse industry leaders and Democrats quickly dismissed them. "This move is about politics, not progress. It is about spin, not the substance of critical issues confronting Kentucky and our signature industry," said Steve Beshear.

It WAS Criminal, After All: A Fayette grand jury indicted the top four Lexington airport managers whose spending of airport money on such things as trips to strip clubs and lavish meals got them fired. The spending, exposed by the Herald-Leader, involved more than $530,000.

Drink Up: Spencer County residents passed a wet vote by 800 votes yesterday, opening up the County for new restaurants and development. Opponents are concerned about the safety of residents.

Eastwood, Too: By a 296-86 margin, the small community of Eastwood also approved alcohol sales. It's out there past Valhalla. Progress everywhere.

Sidewalk Smoking: In Lexington, smokers are apparently defying the UK smoking ban by lighting up on city-owned sidewalks on campus. So the City Council may allow UK to enforce the policy to the curb. The no-smoking policy goes into effect Nov. 19.

Mr. Obvious Was Here: What did you think when you heard that someone was driving the wrong way on the Watterson at 3 o'clock in the morning? Police are finally saying that the driver, 31-year-old Stephanie Byrd, may have been drunk. She and the driver of the car she hit were killed.

More Dubious State News: Seems like Kentucky ranks at the top in every unkind category related to health and social behavior. Now there's news we're at the top of a list of kids who die from abuse or neglect.
