Caesars-Control Mechanisms
Abstract
In this paper one will identify four types of control mechanisms that companies implement to operate and be the successful entity that exists presently. One will compare and contrast these mechanisms and determine the effectiveness of these mechanisms in place today at Caesars. One will research what positive or negative reactions brought about by the control mechanisms in use and explain how these controls affect the four functions of management. Caesars has been a thriving business for decades.
There has to be control of people, inventories, quality, and costs, and various responsibilities. How can a business that operates in the middle of a desert, and internationally, be so successful and manage the people that work there, deliver quality entertainment, luxurious hotel rooms, and coordinate with continuity the exemplary service and product that this business offers?
In this paper one will determine, exam, and explain a few of these control mechanisms and some of the functions management has in this company.
Four Control Mechanisms
In the hospitality service industry a business has to be assertive and able to meet the needs of those being served and the needs of the company to be able to continue to stay in business. According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors website, “Caesars Palace has been a must-see destination resort since it opened in 1966 (LVCVA, 2009).” Caesars hires only quality people to run the business, and those individuals must meet standards and prerequisites to do be an employee of the company.
The researcher knows, from being in the industry for seven and one-half years, there are many ways that this employer has control of the people, inventory, assets, and resources that are available to them.
The control function of management is to make sure that other people are doing what needs to be done and not doing inappropriate things. If the plans are not carried out properly, management must take steps to correct the problem and this is the primary control function of management (Bateman & Snell, 2009). By ensuring creativity, enhancing quality, and reducing cost, managers must figure out ways to control the activities in their organizations (Bateman & Snell, 2009). Managers today must control their people, inventories, quality, and costs, and various responsibilities. (Bateman & Snell, 2009) The four control mechanisms are: 1. Setting performance standards-level of expected performance to attain a given goal; 2. Measuring performance-oral or written reports or personal observations; 3. Comparison of performance to the standard-evaluation of the process; 4. Taking action to correct problems and reinforcing successes-taking appropriate action to correct or adjust(Bateman & Snell, 2009). The implementation of these control mechanisms is the purpose and duty of management of any corporation (Bateman & Snell, 2009).
Setting the Standards
Setting the standards at Caesars is secondary to the business they operate. The ambiance of the casino setting, the magic of the games offered, the luxurious rooms, and world class dining provided at every property owned, operated, and managed by Caesars is legendary.
Strict levels of performance are expected and delivered at every resort Caesars operates in. By adhering to managements guidelines of excellence, Caesars employees are rewarded with benefits packages, paid time off, free food and soft drinks in the employee cafeterias, discounts at resorts owned and operated by the company, and many amenities too numerous to list. Dress codes, behavior rules, quality expectations, and management operate according to standard levels for the attainment of desired goals sought for by the company.
When one is in management at Caesars one is considered the cream of the crop and all doors are opened like magic. The extras one receives from this employer are inspirational to anyone in the industry and continue to fuel the desire to perform at top levels in the company for the ones that work at Caesars. Once one has entered the empire as a fellow employee of the company one has the world at one's feet.

How about a summary, or the salient points, instead of the whole article? Academic papers make for a pretty dry read. |
