Not only are the flowers in the backyard attracting hummingbirds, but they are also attracting butterflies, as well as other creatures.
This symbiotic relationship between flowers and animals is something I find very interesting, especially when it is between two beautiful elements as are these two.
At the beginning of the season, I found some old seeds which my son had picked out. The label was missing, so I had no idea what kind of flower it was. I grew some of the seeds indoors and then transplanted one plant to the ground along my wooden fence. It didn't grow for the longest time, yet towards August in began to grow; then in a matter of only four days it grew almost 4 feet. It looked just like a weed when it was at this height, but I thought I'd still give it a chance just in case it turned out to be something beautiful. Two weeks later after growing to a height of over 7 feet, it began to show some blooms. What bloomed was beautiful. I'm still not really sure what it is, but it is some sort of orange daisy with a yellow-orange center.
When I came home from work yesterday afternoon, as I walked into my backyard it was like I was Snow White with all the animals. A squirrel balanced himself across the fence. A flock of sparrows flew out of the Daisy plant. 3 rested along the top of the fence. A butterfly fluttered from the hyacinth bean vine. A dragonfly flew over my head back around behind me and then over to the Daisy plant to rest. A chipmunk scuttled from under the fence.
Nature came to my backyard. Although my house is settled in a neighborhood of the Highlands, I am very glad of all the mature trees around here which attract the animals. Bringing a little nature to my backyard also gets me away from the city life, as well, and helps to clear my mind. City life and nature also have a symbiotic relationship here.
