Some of my favorite entertainers are going to be at the Speed Art Museum tonight at the Brown-Forman Art After Dark Fleur-de-lis. Doors open at 7:00pm, but the real fun begins after 9:00.

Gregory Maupin, of Le Petomane Theatre Ensemble, directs a dramatic reading of Hunter S. Thompson's 1970 essay, "The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved," performed by Leah Roberts and Delilah Smyth. We salute the Fleur-de-lis organizers for going out on a limb with this avant garde performance piece.

Ninnie, Queen of Cups (also known as Cynthia Norton) will thrill you with her surreal hillbilly stylings of country-western and folk music. Ninnie is well-known for her performance art throughout Europe. You don't want to miss her.

Wax Fang is also playing. Sorry to say, I can't tell you anything about them but I hear the kids love them.

There will be many fun things to eat and drink. Like cheese. And traditional Kentucky fare. Cocktail of the event is something called a Fleur Royale (Finlandia vodka and Chambord). Sounds better than a royale with cheese.

Poet Merle Bachman will lead a "Fleur-de-POETRY."

Artist Martin Rollins will be sketching in the galleries.

You can buy merchandise from WHY Louisville.

Watch short films about movements through the city in the "Moving Movie Louisville," segment of the shindig. These will be going on all over the museum. The event was curated by Ryan Daly of the Louisville Film Society.

Finally, and most controversially, is the $27 art sale, called "Louisville 27: Community." 200 artists were asked to donate small pieces anonymously to be sold for $27.00, to benefit the museum's education programs. Why $27? The museum was founded in 1927. That's why.

This request caused a stir among artists, including Billy Hertz, who are constantly asked to donate their works for charity. Artists fired back by submitting artwork using baloney (or bologna) as their medium. Wonder how many of those pieces will sell?
