Favored snack mixes was a topic that came up at last nights Halloween party. So I thought I'd share mine...Archer Farms Chocolate Drizzle Indulgent Snack Mix. This is a Target brand and not always easily found. I'm not sure if it's seasonal, but I did recently spot it again at the local Target.

Archer Farms Chocolate Drizzle Indulgent Snack Mix is a Chex Mix type snack, drizzled with white chocolate and dark chocolate with a dash of cayenne pepper. This gives me the sweet/salty snack I love with a slight kick of spicy. This stuff is incredible and I've yet to share with anyone that hasn't liked it. I highly recommend a trip into the chip/nut isle at Target for a bag.

NEW & EXCITING on Dixie Hwy

Now I know that does not pertain to many of you, but for people that live along Dixie Highway and surrounding neighborhoods, it's exciting to get something new that isn't a used car lot, Walgreen's or bank. A new sit down restaurant is very exciting...especially for someone like me that enjoys Asian food.

Yesterday we noticed a Grand Opening sign in front of Dixie Manor for Fuji, an Asian Bistro. Today we stopped in for lunch and was pleasantly surprised...not a buffet line anywhere in sight. More to my delight were the shiny new hibachi grills.

The restaurant is tucked into a corner next to the cinemas, the former home to Japanese buffet. The atmosphere is very relaxing...plum colored walls and quite background music. There is a small bar area when you enter that serves up sushi. Then cross through an arched divider into the restaurant area to find four hibachi grills and a dozen tables. No, it isn't a big place...but it looks like they have additional space further back. The menu is extensive...appetizers, sushi/sashimi, teriyaki, tempura and udon in addition to the standard hibachi grill fare.

They won't replace Sakura as our favorite...but they aren't across the county either. I look forward to going back and exploring the menu. Today, we stuck with the tried and true, steak and chicken from the hibachi. But there are many interesting options.

I hope the people of Valley Station, PRP and Shively will embrace and support Fuji. I'd like to see something succeed out here besides fast food. It's a shame that for such a densely populated area as the Dixie corridor, that we have so little to chose from. Surveys show me spend our money in the east end...maybe because we don't have anything close to home?

Now...we just need a bookstore. Border's, can you hear me?

Chez Seneba
4218 Bishop Lane

This little place at the corner of Bishop Lane and Newburg Road features west African cuisine. Which I am told is totally different than east African, served locally at Queen of Sheba on Bardstown Road. They've been successful enough to move from their former location, that could only seat a dozen to a former Long John Silver's. Last night we showed up as a party of 9 and did not overwhelm the seating or the one person working...at least we only saw one, and he was wonderful. Our server was friendly and very helpful with questions about the menu and the food and had a sincere smile while doing so. He even shared some of our laughter when a friend didn't heed his warning to be careful with a particular item being hot...as in spicy.

The menu is very limited, but was sufficient for everyone to find something to try. The main menu includes appetizers; entrees of chicken, lamb, fish and kabobs (beef/chicken); along with daily specials. By 7:30 on a Friday night, the daily specials were gone.

We started off with neems, an appetizer that resembles an egg roll, and another that was a deep fried turn over filled with spicy (but not hot) beef. The neems were especially good.

With nine of us we managed to order a nice variety, and as we have a tendency to share...I got to try a little of everything. (The only entree not ordered was the fish). The chicken, a whole chicken, was dark brown from being deep fried and smelled wonderful. It did not disappoint. The seasoning had been stuffed into the meat and it retained the flavor. It was a little spicy but not hot. The lamb was a little tough, but that may be the character of lamb...as this is not usual fare for me. It had a grilled over charcoal flavor. The beef kabob was very good, but the piece I tried was a little undercooked for my taste. The entrees were served with an onion side dish, grilled onion in a spicy sauce with olives. We each opted for couscous or rice as a side. A nice balance to the spicy food.

There was a couple of unusual options on the beverage list, one made from hibiscus was an unusual but not unpleasant flavor. The other was a tea that we were warned was very strong and would keep us up all night. We didn't get it to find out.

The desert offered was a vanilla and sour cream concoction that was a thin, soup like consistency. Very odd by our standards of dessert. But again it seemed a balance to the spiciness of the food...we opted for the Homemade Pie & Ice Cream Kitchen not far away on Bardstown Road.

All in all it was a great experience.

1359 Bardstown Rd

This is one of the many small eclectic restaurants to be found along Bardstown Road in the Highlands. The fare is Argentinian. I've been there a few times. The food has always been OK. The wait staff usually pleasant and efficient. The atmosphere pleasant. A place you'd go because someone else invited you.

However, last night may have changed that. The fare ordered by our group of seven was varied enough that we started test tasting...this is what friends do, they share their food. The last few times, I've ordered the Milanesas, a combination of steak or chicken with ham, mozzarella and provolone cheese, sliced tomatoes and oregano all grilled hot and toasty. It was, as previously stated, just OK. It lacked pizazz. Last night, I ordered a steak. I've had better. But I will give credit that the steak was a thick cut and cooked perfectly medium as ordered. I friend ordered grilled chicken that was wonderfully flavored. There was also seafood and pasta at the table that looked wonderful. There was also plenty of sangria, both red and white.

The finale however was the perfect finishing touch. We don't make a habit of ordering dessert, but it was recommended that we try Polermo's. The server explained our options and I selected the Dulce de leche crepe ala mode with banana ice cream. It was absolutely incredible!

I'll have to keep trying the entrees. I know there is something worth finding. But in the mean time, I'm happy with the appetizers, dessert and sangria.

Rocky's

Last night, sitting at river's edge, Rocky's in Indiana was one of the best seats in town. It was a beautiful evening and the sunset did not disappoint. Unfortunately, the sunset and weather were the best parts of the evening (outside of the company at my table).

The service was slow, unpredictable and unpolished. Out of the four entrees ordered, mine was the simplest...whole wheat penne with marinara sauce and meatballs. Mine, also, was inedible. The penne was overcooked, not drained well and served cold under a heavy marinara sauce of no particular flavor. The meatballs were of an odd consistency, almost powdery, without flavor and severely overcooked. I love meatballs and do not tend to leave them on my plate. So Steve decided to try it...he was not pleased either. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their selections. Steve particularly liked the Tuscan pork chops...but his potatoes were overcooked as well.

The bread was served unsliced, which lead us to the conclusion, that we were to "break bread". Something that might have been extremely awkward if I were dining with people of less familiarity. They did not have sangria...this is just a particular annoyance of mine.

As an appetizer, we had fried zucchini...instead of our normal calamari. It was good, but not the best.

My friend and I shared a slice of chocolate cake drizzled with strawberry glaze. The cake was OK, the thick fudge frosting was pretty incredible in small doses. I was disappointed that there wasn't fresh strawberries included.

I would go back, just because I enjoyed the atmosphere. But I'll have to try something else. But it is sad when an Italian restaurant can't get pasta and meatballs right.
