I don't necessarily disagree with you, but in the world of high school theatre (or at least the quality productions our school puts on) it's hard to pay the bills with new, edgy shows no one has heard of. Case in point, two years ago we did AIDA (Elton John's version) with New Albany High School. This was an excellent show that cost about $40,000 and we just broke even! People confused it with Evita. Sherry Deatrick who reviewed it for Leo said it was so good it made her cry...
This should make you feel better. In April we are doing something totally original, "Celtic Dreams" a dance, blacklight and special effects fantasy! Check it out :)
Well not the school! All productions are paid for by ticket sales, by corporate sponsors, program ads, etc. Welcome to the world of Southern Indiana High School Theatre! Did you see the Showtime special movie? Battle of the High School Musicals (I know cheesy title). It was pretty good.
I thought Barry Blaustein was a little unfair in that movie - esp. to Jeff High and the Nazarenes. I felt so sorry for that one kid whose mom kicked him out of the house for being gay. And some of the arguments between the students seemed "staged." Not too flattering to NAHS, either. got a chuckle out of that, since I graduated from there in '74.
