Would Louisville Welcome These Memphis Billboards?

With National Coming Out Day coming up on October 11th, the Memphis Gay and Lesbian Community Center wanted to make a big statement-- or rather five big statements in the form of billboards. Now up in five busy Memphis, Tennessee intersections, these billboards recognize the local gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender community.

“These people are your neighbors, they're the people that sit next to you in church, they're the people that you work with, they're in your families” says MGLCC Executive Director Will Batts. “We're productive members of society.”

I believe Louisville is ripe for an lgbt affirming billboard campaign like this. What do you think?

Unfortunately, the billboard with the gay Marine has already been destroyed by vandals.

"This particular billboard portrayed a good friend who was discharged from the Marines under the military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy," said Jonathan Cole, chair of the Shelby County Tennessee Equality Project. "This act of vandalism hurts in so many ways."

As controversial world champion runner Caster Semenya is reported to have both male and female sexual characteristics, Sarah Graham, 40, writes about her own life as an intersex woman in I Feel for Caster Semenya - I am a Woman with Male Chromosomes:

EXCERPT: "Although I don't wish to speculate on Caster's diagnosis – that's her private business – I want her to know that she is not alone. And only she can decide her gender – nobody else can. I had absolutely no idea that I was intersexed – nor did any of my partners. But my doctor and gynecologists did know the truth about my body. I was lied to – and my parents were too. This wasn't a one-off. It was standard policy (until the mid-1990s) to hide the truth about all intersex conditions like mine."

For more about the concepts of gender and transgeder people, please see the superb educational video below "Transgender Basics" produced by the Gender Identity Project, a program of NYC's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center.

Just as Janice Langbehn and her partner Lisa Pond were about to depart from Miami on a family cruise with their three children, Lisa suddenly collapsed. From the moment Janice and the children arrived at Jackson Memorial Hospital, they encountered prejudice and apathy. The hospital also refused Janice and their children visitation for nearly eight hours, telling her that she was in an antigay city and state, and could expect no information or acknowledgment as family. Lambda Legal filed a lawsuit on behalf of Janice and her children. We continue to seek justice for Janice, her children and for all families subjected to anti-gay discrimination.
