I met a wonderful person at the Gaslight Festival this past week. Marilyn Parker is running against Yarmuth. Find out more about Marilyn at her website. marilyn@marilynparkerky.com
Now for those who haven't Xed out this blog screaming about using public access to promote politics, I have been looking for someone to support ever since Rep Yarmuth said on the Francene show "that he would vote the way he thinks is best no matter what the polls say." What I heard was I will vote the way I want and don't care what the people who elected me want. He also said on the same show "If the voters don't like the way I vote let them say so in the election".
I have blogged off and on for years but never felt the need to get more involved. Now I feel the need. Agree or disagree about healthcare I am steaming mad that the Congreesmen are so willing to dismiss millions of voters as the fringe element. Congress seems to me to be setting themselves up as Barons and Earls telling the simple minded voters "WE KNOW WHAT'S BEST FOR YOU SO SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP!"
I am going to exercise my rights as an American and help get Marilyn Parker elected. Win or lose I will know I did my best to make a change I believe in.
Lets look at the idea and the reality of public schools. Public schools were set up to educate an rural country. In a country with so much potential we had a majority who could not even write thier own name. For the welfare of the nation public schools were established.
Public schools were set up not on the national level but on a local. The reason was people wanted control of what thier kids were taught. Local taxes supported the school and a locally elected board over saw it. A federal system was porposed and soundly defeated. It was feared the washington bigwigs would be out of touch with local wants and needs.
Would anyone say now the federal government has too much control of local schools?
The reality of public schools today is a group of kids who dont want to be there and school officials who look at the kids as federal dollars. Teachers have to spend thier own money for supplies while higher ups have huge expense accounts. Travel "for the good of the district" runs rampant. Massive salaries for the top execs and calls for cost control on the student interaction level.
Students feel this angst from the teachers and feel like "whats the use". Politians say our students need to achive more and reach higher. Do they say this because they want better educated adults who vote or do they say this to shame the already hard working locals?
Lets put the money back in the schools and back in the hands of local people.
In these tough times there are politicians who stand up for what they believe in and are being condemed for it. Elected officals have to feel free to vote as they believe. I dont agree with the current healthcare push but i do believe in Rep. and Sen. feeling free to express thier views. Just as we the voters can express our like or dislike for them by voting. No one would want robots voting in washington. By the same token no one wants politians who are "for sale" either.
Politians that "listen" to lobbist at fund raisers but refuse to listen to protesters are crooked at best and criminal at worst. A wise person is not one that depends only on what they personally know but gathers opinions from outside sources and forms a logical conclusion. We want wise statesman not smart ones. Smart people become vain. Wise people are humble. Humility is not weakness. Vainity is not compitence.
More than ever the country needs everyone to vote. We need to ask the hard questions of our canidates. We need to hold accountable those elected. I would say to all politians Dont promise us the moon and give us a metor shower. We are adults tell us the truth and ask us to work with you to make changes. 2010 is our chance to turn voter apathy around. President Obama showed us people do still care and are willing to vote for something or someone they believe in. Lets take that as a first step to people caring about goverment and being involved.
I live in louisville and thought i would email my representive. I went to the website. I was ask to enter my zipcode. Doing so a message came up that my area is a split district and i need to enter my 9 digit code. The website provided a link. I did as ask and entered the code. I was then rerouted to the link again. Is this a mistake or does my congressman simply not wish to hear from an adverage joe like me?
