Friends of Mojo

Louisville Mojo is the online community for Louisville, Kentucky. Launched in 2003, the site gained momentum as the national social networks grew up. By mid-2005, the site served more pages than the daily paper's web site. Engagement continues to grow to this day, with average session lengths of over 26 minutes. Today, Louisville Mojo is the most popular site in the state, based on Nielsen NetRatings metric of total engagement (total session minute served).

Louisville Mojo offers all of the same features common to other social nets: Profiles, blogs, private messaging, groups, photo galleries, calendars, classifieds, and a number of other more unique applications. Beginning in 2008, we started building "news" applications to fuel citizen journalism and to provide the members with greater opportunity to communicate and popularize their contributions. In late 2009, we began to invest in an editorial team consisting of many of the top local journalists in the metro.

The news system allows anyone to create and post topical news and information. Driven by blogs, the system allows text, image, and video posts to be user-categorized and served in a particular channel or context. Site administrators can feature or remove any member’s channelized content based on quality, relevance, and compliance with the terms of service.

Today, members contribute stories and opinion pieces regularly, and the news system is steadily shifting the way that the site is used. People realize that they can quickly gain an audience when they have something important to say. Increasingly, professional reporters and bloggers are finding value by contributing to the site, due to the centralized traffic and the powerful tools built into the platform.

The most amazing result of our growth is how the personal connections made on our site have improved the lives of so many. We regularly hear stories about marriages, business partnerships, career opportunities, and new friendships formed as a result of interaction on Louisville Mojo. Many local businesses use the site to promote their goods and services, and we also work closely with the national advertising agencies such as Universal McCann, Razorfish, Marc USA, Ogilvy Interactive, and more.

The community of Louisville Mojo itself is now self-sustaining. All of the site moderators are volunteers, and their activities are supervised by paid administrators. Any member can report site abuse by using our integrated abuse reporting system, and we have found the membership to be committed to self-policing. As a company, we have worked diligently to create a site in which people feel a personal stake. The entire phenomenon has been very grassroots.
